Repair and Refinishing of a Birch Desk with Built-In Storage

Custom Furniture, Built-Ins, Furniture Repurposing, Repairs & Maintenance | OJIKI Workshop

This project showcases the repair and maintenance of a customer’s desk that had become worn after many years of use. The customer wanted to restore it to a clean, well-maintained condition.

We restored the condition of the desktop and cabinet, removed the old finish, carefully sanded the surfaces, and refinished the piece.
Our goal was to preserve the desk’s original understated character while bringing out the natural grain of the birch wood.

1. A Well-Used Desk with Visible Scratches and Stains

The piece brought to our workshop was a birch desk with generous built-in storage.

After many years of use, the desktop showed fine scratches, uneven coloration, and large areas of whitish staining. The finish around the cabinet doors had also deteriorated, while the handles and other hardware showed signs of age.

However, the furniture itself remained well constructed, and its distinctive design was still intact. With furniture like this, repairing the damaged areas and refinishing the surfaces can help preserve the original piece so it can continue to be used for years to come.

2. Removing the Old Finish and Carefully Preparing the Surface

For this restoration, rather than simply applying a new coating over the existing finish, we first removed the old finish and carefully sanded the surfaces to prepare the wood underneath.

Proper surface preparation is an important part of refinishing wooden furniture and has a significant effect on the final result. We worked to reduce the appearance of scratches, stains, and deterioration caused by years of use while preparing the surface to retain the natural character of the wood.

The desktop, which makes up a large part of the furniture, showed a particularly noticeable transformation before and after the work.

3. Refinishing While Preserving the Natural Wood Grain

Rather than simply using a dark color to conceal scratches and uneven coloration, we carefully adjusted the color so that the natural grain of the birch remained visible.

After refinishing, the scratches and whitish stains that had previously stood out on the desktop were significantly reduced, resulting in a more even appearance while allowing the natural flow of the wood grain to remain visible. The cabinet was also finished in a rich brown tone that complements its original classic design.

Furniture maintenance is not always about making an old piece look completely new. It can also be about preserving the character it has developed over years of use while restoring its appearance and functionality.

4. Restoring Hardware and Other Details for Continued Use

The overall appearance of a piece of furniture is influenced not only by larger surfaces such as the desktop and doors, but also by the smaller details.
For this desk, we also restored the drawer handles and other hardware that had shown signs of wear over time.

In the after photo, the metal handles provide a subtle accent against the newly refinished wood, giving the entire desk a clean and cohesive appearance. Restoring each element—the desktop, storage areas, doors, drawers, and hardware—can make a significant difference to the overall look and feel of the furniture.

Choosing to Maintain and Restore Furniture Rather Than Replace It

When a tabletop develops stubborn stains, small scratches accumulate, or the finish begins to deteriorate, replacing the furniture may seem like the obvious choice.
However, if a piece of wooden furniture is well made or its size and functionality suit your needs, repair and refinishing may be another option.

For this desk, we retained the existing design and storage features while repairing the worn surfaces and applying a new finish. Furniture repair and maintenance can make it possible to continue using a familiar piece without having to replace something that has served you well for many years.

Summary | Restoring a Birch Desk through Repair and Refinishing

This project involved the repair and maintenance of a birch desk with built-in storage that had been used for many years. To address the stains, scratches, and deterioration of the finish—particularly on the desktop—we removed the old finish, carefully sanded the surfaces, and refinished the desk in a tone that allows the natural wood grain to remain visible.

Wooden furniture inevitably develops scratches, stains, and wear as it is used over time. Depending on its condition, however, repairing damaged areas and refinishing the surfaces can help preserve a familiar piece of furniture and extend its useful life.

At OJIKI Workshop, we assess the condition and materials of each piece and recommend an appropriate approach, including repair, maintenance, refinishing, or repurposing.
If you would like to restore furniture you have used for many years, or if you have a cherished piece that you would prefer to keep rather than replace, furniture restoration and maintenance may be worth considering.
