This project showcases a custom-made living room storage unit created for a customer in Ebina, Kanagawa, who wanted to make better use of the unused space beneath their kitchen counter.

The center features sliding-door storage that keeps everyday household items neatly out of sight, while open shelving on the side provides space for displaying favorite accessories and décor.
By making full use of the available space, we created a practical storage unit that blends naturally into the living room.

1. Custom Storage Designed to Fit Under the Kitchen Counter

The space beneath a kitchen counter often feels like it could be put to better use, yet finding ready-made furniture that fits perfectly can be difficult.

For this project, we custom-built the storage unit to match the height and width of the existing kitchen counter.
As shown in the photo, it fits neatly beneath the counter, creating a seamless appearance that makes it look almost like part of the original built-in cabinetry. The light wood tones complement the counter and flooring, helping this generously sized storage unit feel less imposing in the room.

2. Sliding-Door Storage Keeps Everyday Items Neatly Out of Sight

Most of the front is fitted with sliding doors. Because sliding doors do not swing outward, they can be opened and closed without requiring extra clearance in front of the cabinet.

This is particularly useful in a living room where people need space to move around and where dining tables, chairs, and other furniture may be nearby. Keeping everyday household items behind closed doors also makes it easier to maintain a clean, uncluttered appearance.

Adjustable Shelves for Flexible Storage

Inside the sliding doors, two adjustable shelves are installed on each side.

The shelf positions can be changed to suit the height of the items being stored. Whether used for books, documents, household essentials, or other items used in the living room, the shelves can be easily adjusted as storage needs change.
Being able to plan not only for what needs to be stored today but also for how the space may be used in the future is one of the advantages of custom-made storage.

3. Open Side Shelving for Displaying Favorite Items

The side of the cabinet features four tiers of open shelving.

Unlike the enclosed storage at the front, these shelves have no doors, making frequently used items easy to reach. The gently curved front edges of the shelves give the cabinet a softer appearance and naturally complement the rounded edge of the kitchen counter.

The shelves can also be used as a display space for favorite accessories, photographs, small plants, and other decorative items.
This design combines concealed storage with open display shelving in a single piece of furniture.

Turn Unused Space into Practical Storage with Custom-Made Furniture

Spaces beneath kitchen counters vary in height and width from home to home, which can make it difficult to find ready-made furniture that fits perfectly. With custom-made furniture, the dimensions can be tailored to the actual space, while the interior layout can also be designed around what you want to store and how you use the room.

This custom storage unit combines several practical features:
・Makes full use of the space beneath the kitchen counter
・Sliding doors keep stored items neatly out of sight
・Adjustable shelves provide flexibility for different storage needs
・Open side shelving provides space for displaying decorative items

A space where you have thought, “It would be useful to have some storage here,” can be transformed into practical everyday storage with furniture designed specifically to fit your home.

Summary

This project featured a custom living room storage unit designed to fit beneath a kitchen counter for a customer in Ebina, Kanagawa.

By building the unit to fit the existing counter, previously unused space was transformed into practical storage. Sliding doors and adjustable shelves at the front provide ample concealed storage, while open shelving on the side offers space for displaying decorative items. Under-counter storage is not only a practical way to increase storage capacity—it also makes it possible to create a balanced combination of concealed storage and open display space.
