Restoring and Refinishing a Teak Dining Table

This project showcases the restoration and refinishing of a well-loved four-seat teak dining table. Our client wanted to preserve and continue using the table for many years to come by repairing the tabletop and restoring its original beauty.

A dining table is one of the most important pieces of furniture in a home, where families gather every day to share meals and create lasting memories. Over time, scratches, stains, and worn finishes can make even a cherished table look tired, leading many people to wonder if it’s time to replace it.

In this project, we carefully removed the tabletop, repaired its surface, and applied a fresh oil finish. The result was a beautifully restored table that once again showcases the rich grain and warm color of natural teak.

1. Restoring a Well-Loved Teak Dining Table

This project involved restoring a teak dining table that had been part of the client’s home for many years.

Because it had been used daily, signs of wear had gradually become more noticeable, including:

• Fine scratches
• Worn finish
• Fading caused by years of use
• Uneven surface texture

2. Carefully Repairing the Removed Tabletop

The restoration began by removing the tabletop from its base, allowing us to work on every part of the surface with precision.

After stripping away the old finish, we carefully inspected the surface for scratches, dents, and uneven areas. Using a traditional hand plane, we resurfaced the tabletop to restore a smooth, even finish.

This process provides several important benefits:

• Reduces the appearance of scratches
• Creates a smooth, comfortable surface
• Provides the ideal foundation for a beautiful new finish

3. Bringing Back the Natural Beauty of Teak with an Oil Finish

Once the surface was fully prepared, we applied a natural oil finish. Unlike film-forming finishes, oil penetrates the wood, enhancing its natural grain while creating a rich, warm texture.

The refinished tabletop beautifully restored the qualities that make teak so highly valued, including:

• Its distinctive warm reddish tone
• Beautiful natural grain patterns
• A soft, natural sheen

Compared with its weathered appearance before restoration, the tabletop once again displays the warmth and richness of natural wood.
