Repair and Refinishing of an Extendable Dining Table

We would like to introduce an order from a client who wished to continue using a dining table they had loved for many years, even though it had become damaged, and requested that it be repaired.

This table was made from pine wood, known for its gentle wood grain. However, pine is a soft wood, so after many years of use, it tends to develop scratches and dents, and the finish can also wear down easily.
The table we received also had deep scratches and peeling finish across the tabletop, showing the years of use it had experienced.

For this project, we restored the table as a piece that could continue to be used for many more years, while improving the scratches and stains as much as possible and preserving the character unique to well-used furniture.

1. A Pine Extension Table Used for Many Years

The piece requested for repair was a dining table with an extension function.
Because the tabletop can be expanded as needed, it is useful for family meals and when guests visit.
The soft wood grain and warmth unique to pine are part of its appeal. At the same time, because the wood is soft, it is also prone to scratches and dents in everyday life.

After many years of use, the extension table showed the following conditions throughout.
・Scratches from dishes and cooking utensils
・Wear on the finish
・Dirt on the wood surface
・Chips and scratches along the edges of the tabletop
and more

However, the structure itself was still solid and the table was in a condition where it could be used for many more years, so we proposed restoration through repair and refinishing.

2. Careful Repair of Scratches and Peeling Finish

After checking the condition of the table, we first began by removing the old finish and dirt from the entire tabletop.
Because there were many deep scratches, simply applying a new coat of finish over the surface would not produce a beautiful result.
Therefore, we combined several processes according to the condition of the scratches.

In particular, “steaming” with an iron is a process that can be especially effective because pine is a soft wood.

Not every scratch can be completely removed, but by making use of the original wood fibers, the surface can be brought closer to a natural condition.

3. Refinishing That Makes Use of the Natural Character of Wood

After the base surface was prepared, we applied a new finish.
At OJIKI Workshop, we place importance not simply on making furniture look brand new, but on preserving the character of furniture that has been used for many years.

We adjusted the color tone while applying the finish so that the wood grain would appear more beautiful, bringing out the warmth and natural expression unique to pine.
The edges of the tabletop are especially prone to visible damage, but through careful repair and sanding, the rounded and gentle form was beautifully revived.

When comparing the before and after, you can see that the areas where the finish had peeled and turned whitish, as well as the fine scratches, became less noticeable, allowing the natural beauty of the wood to return.

4. A Finish Aimed Not Just at Repair, but at Restoration

When people hear “furniture repair,” many may think of simply fixing the damaged parts.
