This time, we would like to introduce a project in which we remodeled an old dresser according to the client’s requests.

1. What Is Remodeling?
At OJIKI Workshop, remodeling means not simply throwing away furniture that is no longer needed or has become difficult to use,
but redesigning and reworking it to suit today’s lifestyle and living environment, giving it new value.
Furniture that is old but filled with memories, or furniture once used by someone important,

2. Before: Background of the Request — Resizing the Dresser
“The dresser we have at home is too large, so we would like to resize it and make it easier to use.”
This remodeling project began with that consultation.
Rather than simply changing the size, the main theme was to “give it new life while preserving the memories.”
The existing dresser had a classic design with a solid, dignified presence.
It was a piece of furniture that clearly showed it had been used with care for many years.
However, because it was large, it felt somewhat overwhelming in a modern living space.
Therefore, we decided to reconstruct it into a compact and easy-to-use form while making use of the necessary parts.
3. Design and Meetings — From Sketches to Production Drawings
After several exchanges of sketches and production drawings with the client,
we carefully reviewed the size balance, storage plan, and ease of use of the mirror.
• Lower cabinet size: W660 × H770 × D450
• Mirror size: W460 × H750 × D120
• Material: Oak
• Finish: Oil finish
Reflecting the client’s request to change it to a natural color,
we decided on a design that highlights the gentle wood grain of oak.
4. Remodeling Process — Parts to Inherit and Parts to Create Anew
The upper mirror box section was remodeled and reused from the original dresser.
It became a symbolic part that connects the past and the present.
The lower cabinet was newly made from oak.
By giving it a clean form and a design with legs, we created a lighter impression in the space.
5. After: A New Appearance Wrapped in the Gentle Expression of Oak
After completion, the dresser became a piece with the bright and soft wood surface of oak as its most striking feature.
It harmonizes well with natural interiors,
and was reborn from its previous heavy impression into a lighter and more elegant appearance.
The oil finish allows the texture of the wood to be felt as it is.
6. Family Memories Preserved Inside the Mirror Box
When the mirror box is opened,
the design reveals the dresser that was a keepsake of the client’s mother.
The interior structure, with its striking red interior and hardware,
exists not simply as storage, but as “a space that inherits memories.”
It is in the hidden parts that the story is truly held.
The client kindly told us,
“I feel the special quality of having a one-of-a-kind dresser.”
Remodeling gives existing furniture a new design and purpose while making use of what is already there.

but creating furniture that carries time and memories into the future.

Based on the traditional production process of Yokohama furniture, which has continued for more than 100 years, he continues to explore new designs using materials such as iron, leather, and glass while engaging in woodworking every day.
