This project features a custom-made headboard designed to match an existing birch wood bed for a home in Sagamihara, Japan. Crafted from the same birch wood as the bed, the headboard blends seamlessly with the original furniture while adding practical storage and dimmable lighting for greater comfort and functionality.

1. A Custom Headboard Designed to Match an Existing Bed

This custom headboard was designed specifically to complement the customer’s existing birch wood bed.

While ready-made headboards often fail to match the size, proportions, or finish of an existing bed, a custom-built solution can be made to fit perfectly in both dimensions and appearance.

As shown in the photos, the new headboard blends naturally with the original bed, creating the impression that both pieces were designed and built together from the beginning.

2. Practical Storage with Built-In Cable Management

The headboard features storage compartments across the top and on both sides, providing convenient space for everyday essentials such as glasses, smartphones, books, and clocks.

The storage lids feature simple circular finger holes instead of traditional handles, giving the piece a clean, minimalist appearance.

Cable access holes were also built into the storage compartments, allowing power cords for lighting and phone chargers to be routed neatly out of sight.

These thoughtful details help keep the bedroom organized while making the headboard comfortable to use every day.

3. Creating a Relaxing Bedroom with Dimmable Ambient Lighting

One of the most distinctive features of this headboard is the integrated lighting built into the storage area.

When illuminated, the warm glow enhances the natural beauty of the birch wood while casting soft indirect light across the wall, creating a calm and relaxing atmosphere throughout the bedroom.

The lighting is fully dimmable, allowing the brightness to be adjusted for different situations, such as:

– Lower light for relaxing before bed
– Brighter light for reading or using a smartphone

The result is a comfortable, hotel-inspired bedroom environment that cannot be achieved with ceiling lighting alone.

4. A Seamless Finish Made Possible by Matching Birch Wood

The headboard was crafted from the same birch wood used for the existing bed.

Birch is known for its light color and subtle grain, making it an excellent choice for natural and contemporary interiors while bringing warmth to the bedroom.

Using the same material allowed us to match the grain, color, and texture, giving the finished piece the appearance of a complete bedroom set rather than a later addition.

One of the greatest advantages of custom furniture is the ability to match new pieces to existing furniture, creating a harmonious and cohesive interior.
