1. Overview of the Guitar and Request Details
The guitar entrusted to us this time was a valuable Salvador Ibáñez e Hijos guitar made in Spain between the Taisho period and the early Showa period. The finish had deteriorated over time, and surface scratches had become noticeable, affecting playability. The client’s request was to restore this memory-filled guitar so they could once again enjoy playing it.
What Is Salvador Ibáñez e Hijos?
Salvador Ibáñez e Hijos was a long-established guitar maker active in Valencia, Spain, from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. Founder Salvador Ibáñez earned a strong reputation for the quality and tone of his classical and flamenco guitars, and the business was later continued by his sons, “e Hijos.” Their careful craftsmanship and artistry were supported by many musicians of the time, and their guitars continue to be highly valued today as vintage instruments.
2. Condition Before Repair, Before
The coating on the guitar surface had peeled due to many years of use and storage, and the top wood had countless scratches and dents. Dents and peeling finish were also found on the sides, and the wood showed signs of shrinkage and aging.
3. Repair and Refinishing Process, During
First, unnecessary old finish was removed by sanding, and the scratches were repaired. We proceeded carefully so as not to damage the delicate wood surface, then carried out masking before refinishing. Lacquer was used for the finish, creating a result that brings out the soft, rich expression of the wood without losing the atmosphere of the period.
4. Finished Appearance After Repair, After
With the finish restored, the beauty of the wood surface came back to life, and the presence of the inlay decoration also became more striking. The feel while playing was greatly improved, and during a test performance in the workshop, we were able to confirm that the guitar had returned to a condition where playing it could once again be enjoyed.
5. Craftsman’s Attention to Detail and Comments
An instrument that has lived for nearly 100 years carries its history, including its scratches. In this repair, rather than trying to “restore it perfectly,” we placed importance on “bringing it into a condition where it can continue to be used.” We hope this guitar, while retaining its deep character, will continue to accompany many musical moments in the years ahead.
