Custom-Made Wooden Wall Bookshelf That Stands Out Beautifully in an Exposed Concrete Space

A bookshelf is not only for storing books. It is an important piece of furniture that greatly affects the impression of the entire room.
Especially when existing furniture is made from natural wood, adding new storage can sometimes create a sense of mismatch, such as “the color does not match” or “the wood grain feels different.”

This time, we would like to introduce a custom-made bookshelf produced using the same natural ash straight-grain veneer plywood to create a sense of unity with the existing bookshelf.Here is a project that combines excellent storage capacity and design, where the inorganic feel of a concrete wall and the warmth of wood harmonize beautifully.

1. Custom Ash Straight-Grain Bookshelf Designed to Match Existing Furniture

The bookshelf produced for this project was made to match the existing bookshelf seen in the back left of the photo. Since the existing bookshelf used natural ash straight-grain veneer, we also selected veneer that suited the existing ash straight-grain design for the new bookshelf.

If a commercially available ash straight-grain item had been added, the wood grain and color tone might have differed slightly from the existing bookshelf, making the two bookshelves look like separate designs placed side by side and creating a sense of mismatch.

At our workshop, however, after checking the existing bookshelf in person, we produced the new piece not only with the same wood species and grain direction, but also with similar grain expression and color tone. As a result, the two pieces achieved a natural sense of unity, as if both had been installed from the beginning.

In the exposed concrete space, the calm color unique to natural wood gently softens the entire room, resulting in a finish that can be enjoyed for many years without becoming tiresome.

2. Combining Storage Capacity and Display Storage with 12 Compartments and Display Shelves

A bookshelf should, of course, provide plenty of storage, but being able to beautifully display favorite books and small items is also an important point.

The bookshelf we produced this time combines 12 storage compartments with three tiers of display shelves that make use of the wall surface. By separating the roles of storage and display, we achieved both ease of use and design appeal.

The large storage compartments can hold plenty of books, files, storage boxes, and other items, helping organize things that tend to clutter living rooms or studies. Meanwhile, the display shelves can be used to decorate the space with favorite objects, art, accessories, plants, and more, enriching the atmosphere of daily life.

Another appeal of an open bookshelf is that the impression of the space changes depending on what is stored or displayed. You can continue enjoying it as part of the interior by changing the display seasonally or showcasing favorite collections.

Because it is custom-made, the shelf layout can be planned according to the size of the items to be stored and how the bookshelf will be used, resulting in a piece that combines everyday usability with visual beauty.

3. The Warmth of Natural Wood That Stands Out in a Concrete Space

The installation location for this project features an exposed concrete wall. While inorganic concrete gives a stylish impression, if the furniture is also made from inorganic materials, the space can easily feel cold.

By using the same natural ash straight-grain veneer as the existing bookshelf, the warmth unique to wood was added, bringing balance to the entire space. The photos show how beautifully the gray concrete and the soft tones of the wood grain harmonize.

By increasing the area of natural wood texture within the line of sight against the exposed concrete design, the space was transformed into one that feels modern yet calm and comfortable.

4. Size Planning Made Possible by Custom-Made Production

For a bookshelf, fitting perfectly to the installation wall contributes to both visual beauty and ease of use.
This bookshelf was also made from scratch while considering the room dimensions and balance with the existing furniture.

Summary

The custom-made bookshelf produced for this project uses the same natural ash straight-grain veneer plywood as the existing bookshelf, creating a sense of unity as if it had been installed from the beginning.
