Storage furniture is not only for putting things away. It is also an important interior element that greatly affects the impression of a space.
This time, we would like to introduce a custom-made display and storage shelf that combines a steel frame with natural Japanese cedar wood.
The black steel frame gives the space a sharp, refined look, while the gentle wood grain unique to Japanese cedar adds warmth. By combining open storage with storage behind doors, both “display storage” and “hidden storage” were achieved.

In addition to its design appeal, this piece features an assembly-type frame designed with future搬入 and 搬出 in mind, making it a highly functional custom-made storage unit.

1. Stylish Design Where Steel and Japanese Cedar Harmonize

The storage shelf produced for this project is a custom-made storage unit combining a black steel frame with Japanese cedar wood.

By installing the storage shelf in a space that previously had only a black wall surface, we added not only storage functionality but also design character to the entire space.

The black steel frame blends naturally with the wall surface, and the gentle wood grain of Japanese cedar adds warmth, preventing the space from feeling too inorganic. The contrast between black and wood enhances the texture of each material, creating a finish that brings out the appeal of both.

In addition, by arranging open storage and storage with doors in a balanced way, the design combines beauty as a display piece with practical functionality.

This storage shelf, combining the sharp impression of steel with the warmth of natural wood, is custom-made furniture that can be easily incorporated into a wide range of spaces, including offices, stores, living rooms, and workspaces.

2. A Layout That Balances Display Storage and Hidden Storage

For storage shelves, not only ease of use but also visual beauty is important.
In this storage shelf, each section is arranged in a well-balanced way.
・Open shelves
・Storage with doors
・Display space
・Partitions that also serve as interior elements on the sides of the shelves

The open sections can be used to display books, small items, houseplants, catalogs, and more, creating a stylish impression in the space. Meanwhile, storage with doors can hold supplies, documents, and other items you do not want to show, helping keep the room looking neat at all times.

Being able to use different storage methods depending on the purpose is one of the appeals unique to custom-made storage.

3. Material Selection Using Both Solid Japanese Cedar and Straight-Grain Japanese Cedar Veneer

For this storage shelf, we balanced design appeal and practicality by selecting the most suitable wood for each visible section.
To achieve both attractive design and durability, we used different materials for each part.

Area Used Material Used Features
Doors Straight-grain Japanese cedar veneer plywood Straight-grain wood was used so the grain lines run cleanly, creating an elegant finish with beautifully aligned lines when the doors are closed.
Shelves and Side Panels Flat-grain solid Japanese cedar The natural wood grain and knots can be enjoyed, creating the warmth and presence unique to solid wood.

For the doors, we used straight-grain Japanese cedar veneer plywood, where the wood grain lines run beautifully and evenly. The clean grain unique to straight-grain wood gives the entire storage shelf a calm impression and a sense of quality. When multiple doors are closed, the grain also aligns beautifully, creating a clean and refined design.

On the other hand, flat-grain solid Japanese cedar was used for the shelves and side panels. The gentle grain and knots characteristic of flat-grain wood appear naturally, allowing the unique expression of natural wood to be enjoyed in each piece. Even when items are placed on the shelves, the warmth of wood can be felt, giving the entire space a soft atmosphere.

By combining the beauty of straight-grain veneer with the rich expression of solid wood, this custom-made storage shelf offers not only visual beauty but also the full charm of natural wood.

4. Assembly-Type Steel Frame Designed for Easy Installation

For the frame of this storage shelf, we adopted an all-steel assembly-type structure.

When large storage furniture is made as a single integrated unit, installation can sometimes become difficult due to restrictions such as entrances, corridors, and elevators. However, by using an assembly-type structure, each component can be carried in separately, allowing smooth installation even in narrow corridors or indoor spaces.

Another major benefit is that, if the office is relocated or the layout needs to be changed in the future, the shelf can be disassembled and reassembled, making it easier to continue using for many years. Although it is custom-made furniture, it is designed to respond flexibly to changes in the surrounding environment.

Because high-strength steel is used for the frame material, the structure remains stable even when many items are stored, making it suitable for large-capacity storage. While achieving a level of rigidity that would be difficult with wood alone, we also created a durable structure capable of withstanding long-term use.

Furthermore, the black steel frame tightens the overall impression of the space and beautifully highlights the contrast with the gentle wood grain of Japanese cedar. By harmonizing the warmth of natural wood with the sharp impression of steel, the result is a stylish storage shelf that stands out not only in homes, but also in offices and stores.

In this way, the steel frame, which combines ease of installation, durability, and design appeal, is an important element that enhances both functionality and aesthetics.
