This project showcases the repurposing of a cherished upright piano into a custom storage cabinet, allowing a family to preserve precious memories while giving the instrument a new purpose in everyday life.
“This is the piano I played every day as a child.”
“It’s filled with family memories, so I just can’t bring myself to part with it.”
For many families, an upright piano is far more than a musical instrument—it’s a treasured part of their history. In this project, we transformed a beloved piano into a one-of-a-kind piece of furniture, preserving its distinctive character while giving it a practical new role in the home.

1. Giving New Life to a Family Upright Piano
This project involved repurposing an upright piano that had been part of the client’s family for many years. Rather than disposing of an instrument that was no longer being played, the goal was to transform it into a beautiful storage cabinet that could continue to be used every day.
Although the piano has retired from its role as a musical instrument, it now continues to serve the family as a meaningful piece of furniture, keeping treasured memories close at hand.

2. Careful Disassembly to Preserve Valuable Components
Every piano repurposing project begins with a meticulous disassembly process.

Because an upright piano contains hundreds of carefully assembled parts, each component must be removed with great care to avoid damaging the pieces that will be reused.

The project involved carefully removing and assessing components such as:
- Keyboard
- Action mechanism
- Internal structural parts
- Exterior panels
Each piece was evaluated to determine how it could best be incorporated into the new design.

3. Transforming the Piano into a Functional Storage Cabinet
The finished cabinet is a truly one-of-a-kind piece of furniture that preserves the unmistakable character of the original piano.
One of its most distinctive features is the original keyboard fallboard, which was carefully repurposed as the cabinet door. At first glance, it’s immediately recognizable as a piano, preserving its unique identity.

Inside, practical shelving provides versatile storage for everyday use, including:
- Living room storage
- Bookshelves
- Storage for small household items
- Display shelves for decorative objects
The piano’s original glossy black finish was also preserved, allowing its elegant appearance and sentimental value to live on in a new form.

4. A One-of-a-Kind Custom Repurposing Project
Every piano is different, with its own dimensions, construction, and history. For that reason, each repurposing project is designed entirely from scratch.
This cabinet was carefully planned to meet the client’s needs while making the best possible use of the original piano.
Custom repurposing offers many advantages, including:
- Preserving meaningful original components
- Designing furniture to fit a specific space
- Creating storage tailored to everyday living
The result is furniture that combines treasured memories with practical functionality—something that simply can’t be achieved with mass-produced pieces.

5. Keeping Precious Memories Alive for Years to Come
Furniture and musical instruments often become part of a family’s story.
Rather than saying goodbye to a cherished piano, this project demonstrates another possibility—transforming it into something that continues to be part of everyday life.
By repurposing the piano, it begins a new chapter as functional furniture while preserving the memories it represents. We hope it will continue to be loved and appreciated for many years to come.
