This project showcases a custom front-facing book display and wall storage unit created for a kindergarten in Yamato, Kanagawa. Designed specifically for young children, it encourages independent reading while keeping books and learning materials neatly organized.

Children are more likely to develop a love of reading when books are displayed at eye level and within easy reach. By designing the shelves at a child-friendly height and displaying book covers instead of only the spines, we created an inviting space that naturally sparks curiosity.

Crafted with the warmth of natural oak veneer, the unit blends beautifully into the kindergarten’s interior while creating a comfortable and inspiring reading environment.

This custom book display was designed alongside a matching wall storage unit (featured on a separate project page). Together, they create a practical and visually cohesive learning space that combines display shelving, organized storage, and a welcoming atmosphere for children.

1. Child-Friendly Book Display Designed at the Right Height

This custom book display was designed at a height that allows young children to reach books comfortably on their own.

As shown in the photos, positioning the shelves close to the floor offers several advantages:

• Easy for young children to reach
• Encourages children to choose books independently
• Makes tidying up simple and enjoyable

Rather than relying on teachers to hand out books, the design encourages children to explore and discover books for themselves.

2. Front-Facing Book Display That Inspires Reading

Traditional bookshelves often display only the spines of books, making it difficult for young children to recognize and choose what interests them.

For this reason, we designed a front-facing display shelf that showcases each book’s cover.

Displaying colorful picture book covers helps children naturally develop an interest in reading by making books easier to notice and choose.

The unit is crafted from oak veneer and finished with Osmo Oil in a walnut tone, enhancing the natural grain of the wood while creating a warm, calming atmosphere.
