Custom Monkeypod Wood Storage Cabinet with Doors and Two-Tier Shelving

Custom Furniture, Built-Ins, Furniture Repurposing, Repairs & Maintenance | OJIKI Workshop

This project showcases a custom-made storage cabinet with doors and a matching two-tier shelf, both crafted from beautiful solid monkeypod wood, a species well known in Hawaii.

Monkeypod is a highly sought-after hardwood known for its bold, dramatic grain patterns. For this project, we carefully selected the grain from a single slab and incorporated the tree’s natural live edge wherever possible.

The result is custom furniture that combines practical storage with striking natural beauty, making it a true focal point in the room.

1. The Distinctive Beauty of Monkeypod Wood Grain

This project was crafted using solid monkeypod wood, a favorite among lovers of natural hardwood furniture.

As you can see, the wood features a dramatic contrast between light and dark tones. The cabinet doors were carefully cut from a single slab so that the grain flows continuously across both doors, creating a seamless appearance.

Round finger pulls were added to maintain a clean, simple design while providing comfortable everyday use.

2. Functional Storage Cabinet with Doors

The cabinet was designed not only for its appearance but also for everyday practicality.

Features include:

– Adjustable shelving
– Convenient drawers for organizing smaller items
– Spacious enclosed storage

The combination of flexible storage options makes it easy to organize a variety of household items while keeping everyday clutter neatly hidden from view.

3. Two-Tier Shelf Featuring a Natural Live Edge

Alongside the cabinet, we also created a matching two-tier monkeypod shelf.

The shelves retain the tree’s natural live edge, preserving the original outer contour of the wood. These organic curves create warmth and individuality that cannot be replicated by manufactured materials.

Whether displaying plants, decorative objects, or favorite collectibles, the shelving beautifully enhances any living space.

4. Oil Finish That Enhances the Natural Beauty of the Wood

The furniture was finished with a natural oil finish. Unlike film-forming finishes, oil penetrates the wood, allowing you to enjoy its authentic texture and feel.

The finish also highlights Monkeypod’s distinctive grain and rich color variations while allowing the wood to develop even more character as it ages. It is an excellent choice for anyone who appreciates the natural beauty of solid wood furniture.
