Repurposing a Kitchen Cabinet & Entryway Shoe Cabinet for Improved Design and Functionality

Custom Furniture, Doors, Built-ins, Repurposing, Repair & Maintenance | OJIKI Workshop

This project showcases the repurposing of a long-used kitchen cabinet and entryway shoe cabinet for a home in Zama, Kanagawa. Rather than replacing the furniture, we updated both the design and functionality to better suit the homeowner’s current lifestyle.

Kitchen Cabinet

The original glass cabinet doors were replaced with solid natural wood veneer doors, creating a cleaner appearance while concealing the contents inside.

The lower drawers were also rebuilt with increased depth to accommodate large bottles and other bulky kitchen items, making the cabinet much more practical for everyday use.

Entryway Shoe Cabinet

To create a more spacious and comfortable entrance, the original hinged doors were replaced with sliding doors.

The addition of natural wood veneer gives the entryway a warmer, more inviting atmosphere while improving everyday usability.

Based on the traditional production process of Yokohama furniture, which has continued for more than 100 years, he continues to explore new designs using materials such as iron, leather, and glass while engaging in woodworking every day.
