Custom Loft Stairs for Safe Access to a Storage Loft

Custom Furniture, Doors, Built-ins, Repurposing, Repair & Maintenance | OJIKI Workshop

This project showcases the replacement of a homemade loft staircase with a custom-built staircase that provides safer and more comfortable access to a storage loft in a home in Zama, Kanagawa.

The existing staircase leading to the third-floor storage loft was redesigned and rebuilt to improve both safety and usability.

Before the Remodel

The homeowner had originally built the staircase himself. While it served its purpose, the client wanted a safer and more comfortable solution for everyday use.

During Construction

The stair treads were securely fastened with screws, and each screw hole was concealed with matching wooden plugs (dowels).

After installation, the dowels were carefully hand-planed to create a perfectly smooth, seamless surface.

After Completion

The staircase and loft opening were widened from **600 mm to 850 mm**, making it much easier and safer to move up and down.

By removing the wall beside the staircase, natural light from the third floor now reaches the lower level, creating a brighter and more open living space.

For added safety and durability, the handrail was fitted with **stainless steel components**, providing greater strength while maintaining a clean, modern appearance.

The space beneath the lower section of the staircase, where the slope is gentler, was converted into practical built-in storage.
