Repair, Reassembly & Maintenance of a Damaged Windsor Chair

Custom Furniture, Doors, Built-ins, Repurposing, Repair & Maintenance | OJIKI Workshop

This project showcases the repair of a well-loved Windsor chair that had been used for many years and had developed structural damage.

To restore the chair’s strength and stability, we repaired the damaged components and completely disassembled, inspected, repaired, and reassembled the chair to eliminate looseness caused by years of use.

Repair Process for the Windsor Chair

1. Identifying the Cause of the Looseness

To determine the source of the chair’s instability, we first completely disassembled it.

Each component and every mortise-and-tenon joint was carefully inspected to identify loose or damaged areas requiring repair.

2. Repairing the Components

Repairing the Back Spindle
One of the back spindles had been damaged. We carefully repaired it by restoring and adjusting the tenon joint to ensure a secure fit.

Adjusting and Reinforcing the Mortise-and-Tenon Joints
During reassembly, each tenon was carefully reshaped where necessary and reinforced to restore the chair’s structural integrity.

3. Reassembly

During reassembly, we carefully checked:

– The overall alignment of the chair
– Twisting or distortion of the frame
– Overall balance and stability

Each component was precisely positioned to ensure the chair was sturdy and comfortable to use once again.

4. Finishing Touches

Finally, the chair was thoroughly cleaned to restore the natural beauty and texture of the wood.

After a final inspection, the repaired chair was returned to the customer.

Highlights of the Repair

✓ Completely disassembled and inspected every component to identify the root cause of the looseness.
✓ Repaired the damaged back spindle to restore durability.
✓ Adjusted and reinforced the mortise-and-tenon joints for improved strength.
✓ Corrected the chair’s alignment and balance during reassembly.

Thanks to this restoration, the Windsor chair regained its original stability, strength, and elegant silhouette.
