Custom-Made Loft Stairs with Storage Made from Natural Poplar Wood

We would like to introduce an order from a client in Midori Ward, Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture, who requested that the ladder used to access the loft be changed into stairs.

1. Background of the Request | From Ladder to Stairs

Have you ever felt, “A ladder feels a little scary…” or “It is hard to go up while carrying things…” when accessing a loft?

In this project, the client had been using a ladder to go up and down from the loft, but had concerns such as “going up and down feels unstable” and “it is difficult to move while carrying things.” Therefore, the request was to create a loft space that could be accessed safely by replacing the ladder with solid stairs.

To solve these concerns, we custom-made safe and easy-to-use loft stairs. We also added storage, incorporating ideas to make everyday life more comfortable.

2. Design and Material | A Unified Space with Poplar Wood

For these stairs,
we used poplar wood to improve the design quality while matching the atmosphere of the room.
The reason we chose poplar wood is that it blends naturally with the existing floor and furniture, making it easier to install stairs without creating a heavy or oppressive impression.

By matching the atmosphere of the room, the newly installed stairs blend in naturally without feeling out of place, as if they had always been part of the space.

3. Ease-of-Use Features | A Design for Safe Climbing Up and Down

The stairs produced for this project include a handrail so that users can go up and down safely, making it easier to maintain balance and allowing anyone to use them with confidence.
The design places importance on making the loft something that can be used safely and easily in everyday life.

These stairs were designed so that each step provides a stable place for the foot when going up and down. This allows the body to stay steady while moving, making the stairs easy to use even when carrying items.

4. Storage Function | Effective Use of the Space Under the Stairs

For these stairs, we added drawer storage to the landing area, which can easily become dead space.
As a result, the stairs are not just “stairs,” but also function like furniture that makes daily life more convenient.

The size was adjusted to match the space, and the design was balanced so that the stairs would not feel overwhelming.
