1. Carefully Selected Solid Japanese Horse Chestnut Slab for the Tabletop
A solid Japanese horse chestnut slab was used for the tabletop. The client accompanied us from the material selection stage and chose their favorite slab from several options. Our craftspeople carefully sanded and shaped the slab, then finished it with a matte urethane coating that highlights the natural texture of the wood.
The gently undulating live edge and the bold yet beautiful grain unique to Japanese horse chestnut give the space a one-of-a-kind presence.
2. What Is Japanese Horse Chestnut?
Japanese horse chestnut, known as “Tochinoki” in Japanese, is a broadleaf tree that grows naturally in mountainous areas throughout Japan. As a wood material, it has the following characteristics.
• Soft and easy to work with
It is less prone to warping and cracking, making it valued for furniture and carving materials.
• Distinctive and rich wood grain
The grain is bold and powerful, and one of its charms is that its expression changes depending on how the light hits it.
• Gentle color tone
Its cream to pale yellow-brown tones add warmth to a space.
• Rarity and presence
Large-diameter trees that can be used as single slabs are becoming fewer each year, making it a rare and high-quality material.
The slab used for this project was a very well-balanced piece, combining the beautiful, expressive grain characteristic of Japanese horse chestnut with a generous size.
3. Custom-Made Steel Legs
For the legs, we combined the tabletop with custom-made steel legs finished in matte black. The contrast between the solid, substantial wooden tabletop and the straight, light-looking iron legs adds a pleasant casual feel and a modern impression to the overall design.
Each leg was produced individually at the factory, with a structure that provides both strength and stability, making it reliable for everyday use.
4. Beautiful Harmony with the Home Interior
The completed table pairs beautifully with the home’s natural wood flooring and cabinetry, blending into the space as if it had always been there. In the dining room filled with natural light, the beauty of the wood stands out even more.
