Restoring an Antique Oak Desk: Repair and Refinishing
Custom Furniture, Built-Ins, Furniture Repurposing, Repairs & Maintenance | OJIKI Workshop
This project showcases the restoration of a well-loved oak desk for a customer who wanted to repair years of wear and bring it back to beautiful, usable condition.
Furniture that has been used for many years develops a unique character that only comes with age. Over time, however, issues such as cracks in the desktop, stiff tambour doors, surface scratches, and faded finishes can become more noticeable.
For this project, we carefully repaired each damaged area while preserving the desk’s original character, restoring it so it can continue to be enjoyed for many years to come.

1. Restoring a Well-Loved Oak Desk
The piece entrusted to us was an oak writing desk that had been used for many years and was showing clear signs of age and wear.

During our inspection, we found several common issues associated with long-term use, including:
– Cracks in the desktop
– Fine surface scratches
– Worn finish
– Stiff tambour door operation
The customer wanted to preserve this meaningful piece rather than replace it, so we carried out a complete repair and refinishing.
2. Carefully Repairing the Tambour Door and Desktop
The primary focus of this restoration was repairing the tambour door and the cracked desktop.

A tambour door is made from many narrow wooden slats connected together, making it a delicate mechanism that requires careful handling.

The restoration process included:
– Removing each tambour slat individually
– Repairing and adjusting damaged components
– Reassembling the door to ensure smooth operation

The cracked desktop was also carefully repaired while taking the natural movement of solid wood into consideration.
3. Traditional Craftsmanship for Antique Furniture Restoration
Restoring antique furniture presents challenges that are very different from building new furniture.
Every piece has its own history and condition, so our experienced craftsmen carefully inspected the wood for moisture content, warping, and signs of previous repairs before determining the most appropriate restoration method.
Their work included:
– Assessing the condition of the wood
– Preserving as much of the original construction as possible
– Testing and refining repair techniques throughout the process

This meticulous process is much like performing surgery on a piece of furniture, allowing it to be safely used once again.

4. Refinishing to Restore the Beauty of Oak
Once the repairs were completed, the entire desk was professionally refinished.

The worn surface was restored, revealing the calm beauty and attractive grain that make oak such a timeless material.
Rather than making the desk look brand new, our goal was to preserve its character while making it beautiful and enjoyable to use again. That is one of the greatest benefits of professional furniture restoration.

The tambour door now opens and closes smoothly, improving both functionality and appearance.

5. Preserving Cherished Furniture for Future Generations
Older furniture carries memories and history that simply cannot be replaced.
Instead of discarding a damaged piece, restoration offers the opportunity to preserve it and continue using it for many more years.
This oak desk has been given a new lease on life and is ready to serve its owner once again.
For anyone who wishes to preserve and pass down treasured furniture, professional repair and restoration are excellent options.
