In this article, we introduce a prototype wall-mounted mailbox and wall-mounted key hook designed and handcrafted by OJIKI Workshop.

1. Prototyping a Wooden Mailbox and Key Hook That Blend Naturally into Everyday Life

For this project, we created two prototype products: a wall-mounted key hook and a wall-mounted mailbox.

Both were developed with the idea that everyday items should be easy to use and enjoyable to own for many years. By incorporating the warmth of natural wood, we aimed to create simple designs that blend seamlessly into any entrance while offering something unique beyond mass-produced products.

2. A Simple and Functional Key Hook Made from Solid Oak

The key hook is crafted from solid oak, a hardwood known for its strength and beautiful grain. Finished with natural oil, it preserves the warmth and texture unique to solid wood. The mounting board is also slightly angled, allowing it to appear cleaner and more elegant when installed on a wall.

The hooks are made from solid brass rods.
Rather than leaving the brass smooth, each hook was individually hand-hammered to create a hammered (tsuchime) texture. This handcrafted finish softly reflects light while adding subtle character and individuality.

As the years pass, both the brass and the oak develop a beautiful natural patina, allowing users to enjoy the charm of aging materials.

3. Design Features of the Walnut Wall-Mounted Mailbox

The wall-mounted mailbox is made from elegant walnut. The rich walnut frame paired with a semi-transparent acrylic panel creates a clean, modern appearance while maintaining the warmth of natural wood.

Mail is inserted through the top, while the front acrylic panel slides upward for easy access. This simple opening mechanism combines practicality with refined aesthetics.

Since the mailbox is intended for outdoor use, the wooden surfaces are protected with a generous coat of exterior-grade polyurethane finish. This helps protect the wood from rain and UV exposure while preserving its appearance over time.

As shown in the photos, the rich walnut grain and translucent acrylic complement each other beautifully, creating an attractive focal point at the entrance.

4. What We Learned from Building the Prototypes

The products introduced here were created as prototypes, rather than commercial products.

Building and testing them revealed many opportunities for improvement, including:

• Overall design balance

Many aspects of product development cannot be fully understood from drawings alone. By repeatedly prototyping, testing, and refining each design, we continue to create products that are both beautiful and practical.
