Custom-Made TV Board and Storage Combining Storage Capacity and Design

Custom Furniture, Architectural Woodwork, Built-In Fixtures, Remodeling, Repair & Maintenance by OJIKI Workshop

We would like to introduce an order for a TV board and storage furniture that fits perfectly across the living room wall, based on the size adjustments and materials requested by a client in Ebina City, Kanagawa Prefecture, and proposed by our workshop.
In the living room, the area around the television tends to collect many items, such as recorders, game consoles, wiring, and small accessories. For this reason, we designed the piece to fit the room perfectly while making detailed dimensional adjustments that are difficult with ready-made furniture.

1. TV Board with Detailed Size Adjustments to Match the Room

The client requested a large TV board that would fit across the entire wall.

In this kind of furniture, even a difference of just a few centimeters can greatly affect both the appearance and usability.
<Common concerns when purchasing a ready-made TV board>
・The size is slightly too small
・Gaps are left
・It creates a sense of pressure
・There is not enough storage capacity

On the other hand, by producing it as custom-made furniture, as in this project, it is possible to adjust the design according to the room width, TV size, and items to be stored.
At our workshop, we designed the TV board while making several dimensional adjustments according to the client’s requests, resulting in a TV board that fits naturally into the space.

2. Refined Wood Expression Unique to Black Cherry Veneer

At first, the client consulted us about using decorative plywood, but for this project, we proposed natural black cherry wood veneer.

Natural wood veneer is a finishing material made by thinly slicing real wood and applying it to the surface.

《Difference Between Decorative Plywood and Natural Wood Veneer》

Material

Easy-to-Understand Features

Decorative plywood

A material made by applying a printed wood-grain sheet, such as resin or paper, to plywood or MDF, which is a board made by solidifying wood particles.
【Appearance】
Thanks to modern technology, it can look very realistic, but with the same product, the wood-grain pattern is exactly the same.
◎ Benefits
・Resistant to scratches and stains
Many products have a resin-coated surface, so spills can be wiped off easily.
・Stable quality
There is almost no concern about warping or cracking as with natural wood.
・Cost
Because it is suitable for mass production, it can be purchased relatively inexpensively.
✖️ Disadvantages
・Texture
When touched, it may feel slightly cold or plastic-like.
・Difficult to repair
If the surface sheet peels or deep scratches appear, the base material may become visible, and repairs tend to stand out.

Natural wood veneer

A material made by slicing natural wood thinly, about 0.2 mm to 0.6 mm, and applying it to a core material such as plywood.
【Appearance】
The surface itself is “real wood.” Each piece has a different grain pattern, with natural knots and color variation.
◎ Benefits
・Authentic texture
It has visual depth, and you can enjoy the warmth and natural character of wood when touched.
・Changes over time
You can enjoy the way the color changes and gains character over time.
・Lightweight and strong
Because the core is plywood, it is lighter than making everything from thick solid wood and is less prone to movement.
✖️ Disadvantages
・Care is needed around water and heat
Depending on the type of finish, leaving moisture on the surface can cause ring stains or lifting.
・Cost
Because real wood is used, the price tends to be higher than decorative plywood.

【Tips for Choosing】
Decorative plywood is suitable for places where you want easy maintenance, where small children are present, or where the furniture will be used heavily, such as around a desk. Natural wood veneer is a good choice for furniture that becomes the main feature of the living room, furniture you want to develop affection for over many years, or places that guests will see, because it greatly enhances the quality and texture of the space.

Black cherry is a premium wood with a soft reddish tone.
《The Appeal of Black Cherry》
・Calm atmosphere
・Elegant wood grain
・Changes over time, developing greater depth

From the photos, you can see how the natural wood grain and soft color tone add warmth to the entire space.

3. Design with Ample Storage Capacity

For a TV board, storage capacity is just as important as appearance.
This TV board is a large piece, approximately 3700 mm wide, so it was designed with plenty of storage space.

《Storage Examples》
・Wiring equipment
・DVDs and game consoles
・Daily necessities
・Documents and small items

Because the living room often needs storage for more items than expected, we also produced vertical storage on the right side. By securing storage capacity while designing the front to look neat, we created a living room space with a reduced sense of everyday clutter.

The result is a TV board with high storage capacity while maintaining a sense of unity throughout the space.

4. Ease of Use with a TV Swivel Stand and Smoked Glass

A swivel stand was installed in the area where the TV is placed. This makes it possible to adjust the direction of the TV according to the viewing position, allowing comfortable use from the sofa, dining area, and other viewpoints.

In addition, smoked glass was used in the center section.
《Features of Smoked Glass》
・The inside is not too visible
・It does not easily create a heavy impression
・The black element sharpens the overall space

By incorporating black into the warmth of the wood, contrast and definition are created in the overall design.

5. A Sense of Unity with the Space Made Possible by Custom Furniture

In this production example, we did not simply design “furniture for placing a television.” Instead, we designed the piece while valuing harmony with the entire room.

Especially with large furniture, balance with the entire room is important.
《Key Points》
・Size balance
・Color tone
・Material texture
・Storage capacity

Because custom furniture can be designed according to the room and lifestyle, it is recommended for those who want furniture that fits perfectly here, want to increase storage, or feel that ready-made furniture does not match the atmosphere.

This project was also completed in a way that greatly pleased the client.
