Repair and Restoration of an Antique Steamer Trunk

We would like to introduce a repair and restoration project for a steamer trunk that was used for sea voyages and railway travel more than 100 years ago.

Steamer trunks are popular not only as storage furniture, but also as interior pieces that convey a strong presence and a sense of history. However, antique furniture that has aged over many decades inevitably develops deterioration such as fading and dirt on the wooden parts, as well as rust on the metal fittings.

For this restoration, our goal was not to remake the trunk so that it looked brand new. Instead, we carefully preserved the unique character of the antique while restoring it to a condition in which it can continue to be used for many years.

1. What Is a Steamer Trunk?

A steamer trunk is a large travel trunk that was used for sea voyages and railway travel from the late 19th century to the early 20th century.
It features an extremely durable construction based on a strong wooden frame reinforced with metal and leather, and was made to safely carry clothing, hats, valuables, and other belongings.

Today, steamer trunks are highly popular as storage furniture and display furniture, and an increasing number of people are incorporating them into the interiors of shops and homes.

2. Condition Before Repair and Key Restoration Points

The two trunks entrusted to us had developed rich and distinctive character over many years.

・Fading of the wooden parts
・Dirt on the surface
・Damage to the wooden slats
・Rust on the metal fittings and deterioration of the finish
These issues were visible throughout the trunks, but they were also part of the history the pieces had accumulated as antique furniture.

For this reason, at OJIKI Workshop, we did not remove everything and make the trunks look new. Instead, we carefully determined which signs of age should be preserved and which damaged areas required restoration before proceeding with the work.

3. Careful Restoration of Each Wooden Part and Metal Fitting

When repairing antique furniture, we do not begin by immediately applying a new finish.
First, the wooden slats and metal fittings attached to the trunk are removed one by one, and each part is restored individually.

◎ Restoration of the Wooden Parts

Each wooden slat was sanded individually, and the color lost through aging was adjusted with stain.
Afterward, a urethane coating was applied to protect the wood, enhancing the beauty of the grain while also improving durability.

◎ Restoration of the Metal Fittings

After carefully removing rust and dirt from the metal fittings, they were refinished in a calm matte black that suits the antique character.
Rather than giving them a glossy, brand-new appearance, we preserved a sense of age and history so that they would remain in harmony with the wooden parts.

4. A Finish That Preserves the Character of an Antique

One of the most difficult aspects of repairing antique furniture is avoiding making it look “too clean.”
If everything were completely covered with a new finish, the character developed over more than 100 years would also be lost.

・The texture of the metal
・Natural color variation in the wood
・Expressions that reflect the period
In this project, we preserved these qualities as much as possible while carefully refining the overall appearance.

When comparing the before-and-after condition, the wooden slats have been beautifully revived, and the metal fittings now have a sharper, more refined appearance.
Even so, the finished trunks do not look “new.” They still clearly convey that they are treasured pieces of antique furniture that have been carefully passed down.

5. Choosing to Pass Existing Furniture on to the Future

Once a piece of antique furniture is given up, it is unlikely that you will ever encounter exactly the same piece again.
Steamer trunks in particular are furniture that conveys the history and culture of travel, and the scratches and changes developed through years of use are also an important part of their value.

“I want to preserve its original appearance as much as possible.”

“I want to continue using it as part of my interior.”
