Remodeling & Maintenance of an Oak Dining Table with an Expanded Tabletop and Reupholstered Chairs
Custom Furniture, Doors, Built-ins, Repurposing, Repair & Maintenance | OJIKI Workshop
This project showcases the remodeling of a client’s oak dining table by expanding the tabletop, along with reupholstering the matching dining chairs.
As families grow and lifestyles change, a dining table that once fit perfectly may begin to feel too small.
Rather than replacing the entire table, this project preserved the original table base while creating a brand-new tabletop tailored to the client’s current needs.
The original oak dining table, which had been cherished for many years, was enlarged from 180 cm to 220 cm. At the same time, the dining chairs were reupholstered to refresh the entire dining set.
By carefully matching the color, grain, and finish of the new tabletop to the existing base, we achieved a seamless result that looks as though it was originally built this way.

1. Expanding the Table from 180 cm to 220 cm for a Changing Lifestyle
For this project, we created a completely new tabletop to enlarge the client’s dining table from 180 cm to 220 cm.
The original table legs were carefully preserved and reused, while only the tabletop was replaced.
The additional 40 cm greatly improved the table’s functionality by providing:
• More comfortable seating for the whole family
• Extra space when entertaining guests
• A larger surface for dining, working, or everyday activities

2. Crafting a Beautiful New Oak Tabletop
The new tabletop was crafted from solid oak, selected for its attractive grain and durability.
Multiple boards were carefully joined together to create one large tabletop.
Each step of the process contributes to a premium-quality finish:
• Carefully selecting boards with matching grain patterns
• Securely joining and clamping the boards
• Hand-planing and sanding the surface to perfection
Every detail was finished by hand, allowing the natural beauty of the wood to shine through.

3. Matching the Finish to the Original Table Base
Because the original table legs were being reused, achieving a natural color match between the new tabletop and the existing base was one of the most important aspects of the project.
Since every piece of oak has its own unique grain and color variation, finishing requires both experience and precision.
The tabletop was protected with a durable polyurethane finish, which offers several advantages:
• Excellent resistance to water and stains
• Improved scratch resistance
• A beautiful, long-lasting sheen
• Easy everyday maintenance

4. Refreshing the Dining Set with Reupholstered Chairs
Along with remodeling the table, we also reupholstered the dining chairs.
Replacing the upholstery instantly refreshed the appearance of the entire dining set by:
• Improving seating comfort
• Giving the chairs a clean, updated appearance
• Creating a coordinated look with the remodeled table
The rich brown upholstery complements the warm tones of the oak, resulting in a timeless and elegant dining space.

5. Remodeling Instead of Replacing – A Sustainable Way to Enjoy Furniture Longer
A dining table is often one of the most treasured pieces of furniture in a home, filled with memories shared over many years.
Sometimes the furniture itself is still in excellent condition, but your lifestyle has changed.
Perhaps the table has become too small, or only the chairs have begun to show signs of wear.
Instead of replacing everything, remodeling allows you to adapt your furniture to your current needs while preserving its sentimental value.
Custom remodeling can include:
• Expanding or resizing tabletops
• Replacing tabletops
• Refinishing surfaces
• Reupholstering chairs
It’s an excellent solution for anyone who wants to continue enjoying well-loved furniture for many years to come.
