Custom Low Table Crafted from a Single Slab of Japanese Horse Chestnut for a Chashitsu

This project showcases a custom low table created as the centerpiece of a traditional Japanese chashitsu (tea room) for a pharmaceutical company in Toyama Prefecture.

We were commissioned to create the main table for **”Shoto-an,”** a traditional Japanese chashitsu owned by a pharmaceutical company in Toyama Prefecture.

From the very beginning, we worked closely with the client to select the ideal slab for the project.

A magnificent **4.6-meter-long single slab of Japanese horse chestnut** was chosen. Rather than concealing its natural live edges, we intentionally positioned the two rugged edges facing one another to celebrate the wood’s organic beauty.

The space between the slabs was filled with a generous amount of **translucent epoxy resin**, creating a striking contrast between the raw character of the natural wood and the refined clarity of the resin.

The finished table serves as the centerpiece of the chashitsu, expressing the harmony between traditional Japanese aesthetics and contemporary craftsmanship while preserving the powerful beauty of the original tree.
