This time, we would like to introduce custom-made picture frames produced at the request of artist Saki Hosoi.

1. Introduction: The Role of Frames in Artworks

In art, a “frame” is said to be more than just a border for protecting a painting.
This is likely because many people believe that it serves as a kind of “stage setting” that connects the artwork with the surrounding space, naturally guiding the viewer’s gaze toward the work.

Depending on its material, color, and shape, a “frame” can greatly change the impression of an artwork and draw out a deeper worldview. By harmonizing with the exhibition space, it can also bring out the appeal of the work to its fullest.

With this in mind, we created these frames from the perspective that a “frame” exists together with the artwork as part of the piece itself and has the power to communicate with the viewer.

2. Background of the Request and Concept

The custom-made “frames” introduced in this project were produced for a series of artworks to be presented at an exhibition by artist Saki Hosoi. For Hosoi’s delicate and narrative style of work, the frames were required to strike a balance of “having presence while not interfering with the artwork.”

3. Materials Used: Mahogany Veneer and Oil Finish Derived from Natural Materials

Mahogany, known for its rich reddish-brown tone and solid presence, was used for these frames. The veneer was carefully joined, and an oil finish was applied to bring out the beauty of the wood grain while creating a calm, subtle sheen. This is a material that will gain even more depth over time.
• Outer dimensions: 300 × 300 mm
• Inner dimensions: 150 × 150 mm
• Depth: 350 mm, with a three-dimensional form projecting forward

4. Design Features: A Three-Dimensional Frame Projecting Forward

The greatest feature of this frame is its pyramid-like three-dimensional structure, in which the thick frame projects boldly forward. While simple in design, it adds depth to the space, creates a strong impression when viewed from the front, and naturally guides the viewer’s gaze toward the artwork.

5. Actual Exhibition Scene: The “Stage” of the Frame Enhances the Artwork

Looking at the exhibition scene, you can see how each artwork gains a stronger sense of narrative and dimensionality by being surrounded by the frame. The warmth of the mahogany and the gentle lighting work together to bring a quiet beauty to the entire space.
