Custom Oak Display Cabinet with Glass Doors for Showcasing Glassware (Private Residence in Setagaya, Tokyo)
Custom Oak Display Cabinet for Glassware with an Antique-Inspired Design
Custom Furniture, Built-Ins, Furniture Repurposing, Repairs & Maintenance | OJIKI Workshop
This project showcases a custom-made oak display cabinet commissioned by a customer who wanted a special place to showcase their favorite glassware.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful to display your favorite glasses and tableware as part of your home’s interior rather than simply keeping them tucked away in a cupboard?
For this project, we created a custom oak cabinet specifically designed to display and store glassware.
To complement the customer’s home, we combined glass doors, a drawer, and an open display shelf. The cabinet features rich brown wood grain and antique-inspired metal hardware, while its tall, gently curved legs and decorative top give it an elegant, classical appearance.
After discussing the customer’s preferences and considering the interior of their home, we developed the design through hand-drawn sketches before bringing it to life.

1. A Custom Display Cabinet for Your Favorite Glassware
For this project, we created a custom cabinet with glass doors, designed to store and beautifully display the customer’s favorite glasses.
While many traditional cupboards are designed to maximize storage capacity, this cabinet serves a slightly different purpose. It was made not only to store treasured glassware but also to make displaying and admiring it part of everyday life.
As shown in the photographs, the cabinet features glass-fronted storage in the upper section, a drawer in the middle, and an open shelf at the bottom.
Each section serves a different purpose, creating a design that combines visual appeal with everyday practicality.
Measuring just 500 mm wide and 270 mm deep, the cabinet is also relatively compact, making it easy to incorporate into a living room, dining room, or other space.
One of the greatest attractions of this custom cabinet is that it serves as both practical glassware storage and an elegant piece of interior furniture.

2. Antique-Inspired Design Highlighting the Beauty of Oak
We selected oak for this cabinet because of its attractive grain patterns and timeless appearance.
Oak is widely used for furniture and flooring. Its distinctive grain and natural character make it a popular choice for many different interior styles.
For this cabinet, we chose a rich, understated brown finish that brings out the natural beauty of the wood grain.
The decorative top and wooden frames surrounding the glass doors are particularly distinctive features.
The upper edge of the cabinet features a gently curved design that rises toward the center, creating the elegant appearance associated with traditional furniture.
The wooden frames around the glass doors have enough depth and substance to give the cabinet a refined appearance without making the design overly elaborate.
By combining the warmth of natural oak with the understated elegance of antique furniture, we created a cabinet designed to be enjoyed for many years.

3. Practical Storage with Glass Doors and a Drawer
This custom cabinet features several types of storage, each designed for different belongings.
Glass Doors for Beautifully Displaying Favorite Glassware
The upper section features two glass doors that open outward.
These doors allow the customer to enjoy seeing their favorite glasses even when the cabinet is closed.
Another advantage is that the doors help keep dust out, making it easier to keep glassware clean compared with open shelving.
Shelves inside the cabinet also make it convenient to arrange glasses of different shapes and heights.

A Convenient Drawer for Smaller Items
Below the glass doors, we incorporated a wide drawer.
This drawer provides convenient storage for glassware accessories, everyday essentials, and other small items that the customer prefers to keep out of sight.
As shown in the photograph, the drawer front highlights the natural grain of the oak and features antique-inspired metal handles on either side.

By coordinating these small design details, we created a consistent appearance throughout the cabinet.
Storage Features and Uses
| Storage Area | Features and Uses |
|---|---|
| Glass-Fronted Cabinet | Displays favorite glassware while helping protect it from dust. |
| Interior Shelves | Provide organized storage for glasses, small dishes, and other tableware. |
| Drawer | Keeps cutlery, accessories, and smaller items neatly out of sight. |
| Lower Open Shelf | Offers display space for vases, decorative objects, and favorite accessories. |
By combining open display areas with concealed storage, the cabinet offers both the pleasure of showcasing favorite belongings and the convenience of keeping everyday items organized.
4. Elegant Curved Legs and an Open Display Shelf
The cabinet’s distinctive design extends beyond its storage compartments to the shape of its legs.
As shown in the photographs, the four legs curve gently toward the floor and gradually taper toward their ends.
Unlike straight furniture legs, these soft curves give the cabinet a lighter, more graceful appearance.
The raised design also creates open space beneath the main cabinet, helping the furniture feel less bulky.

An Open Shelf for Decorative Displays
Between the legs, we incorporated a wooden open shelf.
In addition to providing extra storage, this shelf can be used to display decorative items.
For example, placing a vase, favorite ornaments, or seasonal decorations on the shelf allows the customer to change the cabinet’s appearance throughout the year.
In the photograph showing the cabinet installed in the customer’s home, decorative objects are arranged on the lower shelf, complementing the surrounding interior.
The design allows favorite glasses to be displayed behind the upper glass doors while decorative pieces can be showcased on the open shelf below.

The finished cabinet offers more than storage. It also creates a special place to enjoy displaying meaningful and beautiful belongings.
5. Custom Furniture Designed to Complement Your Home
We created this cabinet after carefully discussing the customer’s preferences and considering the atmosphere of their home.
When designing custom furniture, it is important to think about more than dimensions and storage capacity.
How the finished piece will look in its intended location, and how it will complement the surrounding furniture and interior, are equally important considerations.
For this project, we developed the design with the room’s overall atmosphere and existing interior details in mind.
Bringing the Design to Life Through Hand-Drawn Sketches
Before beginning production, we prepared design sketches to help the customer visualize the finished cabinet.
The customer wanted a piece that would reflect preferences such as:
“I would like a cabinet with a classical appearance.”
“I want to display my favorite glasses beautifully.”
We translated these ideas into a practical furniture design.
Creating a one-of-a-kind piece from a hand-drawn sketch can be challenging, particularly when working with decorative curves and carefully balanced proportions.
Throughout the production process, we paid close attention to the overall balance of the design to bring the original concept to life.

The result is a truly unique cabinet, created specifically for the customer’s home and lifestyle.
