Custom Picture Frame Crafted from Reclaimed Pine Wood

This article introduces a custom picture frame we created for a customer in Koganei City, Tokyo, designed specifically to complement a traditional Japanese sumi-e (ink wash) painting.

Material: Japanese Red Pine (Akamatsu)
Size: W920 × H2060

This custom frame was crafted from reclaimed aged pine wood.

Traditional wood joinery was used to connect the timber along its length, creating a strong and beautifully integrated frame.

Before finishing, the entire surface was wire-brushed using a traditional technique known as Ukizukuri. This process accentuates the natural grain by creating a textured surface, giving the wood a weathered appearance that enhances its rustic character.

A picture frame should never overpower the artwork it holds—it should enhance it.

To complement the quiet elegance of the sumi-e painting, we carefully designed the frame’s color, texture, and proportions to harmonize with the artwork while allowing it to remain the focal point.
